From what age can my child start classes with Simply Theatre Academy?
We run weekly courses in drama and performing arts for all ages between four and eighteen years old.
Can my child try a few classes before committing to the full year?
We offer trial classes on one weekend in the Spring each year as an opportunity for children to experience a class at Simply Theatre. Outside of this time, it is not possible to trial a single class. However, at the start of each year, the whole first half term to the end of October is a trial period for new students. It is very important for us that the students that are in our courses, want to be there and love being there! So, if during the trial period, should a student decide to leave, any unused fees are refunded. For full T & Cs click here. Alternatively, our week-long Summer camps are a great way to experience what life at Simply Theatre is like before committing to a year-round course.
Is it possible to join Simply Theatre part-way through an academic year?
We do not enrol new students during the academic year. All of our courses are year-round courses and an essential part of our academy courses is building the ensemble during Term 1, where we focus on creating strong foundations on which to build throughout the year, growing trust and confidence within the group before progressing towards exploring a particular musical or play in Term 2 with the same children, before building towards our end of year showcases in Term 3. However, summer camps or our October half-term camp can be a great way to trial what life is like at Simply Theatre until enrolments open for the next academic year.
What level of English is required to join a Simply Theatre course?
Our academy is made up of students from a huge range of backgrounds and nationalities, with many children speaking multiple languages and English as a second (or third) language. It is, however, a requirement that all students have a good understanding of English and are confident speakers of conversational English in order to follow instructions and fully join in with the classes.
What if my child doesn’t enjoy their class?
We endeavour for all children to enjoy their time at Simply Theatre, and are confident that our tailored courses can nurture all types of personality and abilities. However, if a child or parent feels that Simply Theatre is not the right fit for them within the first 6 weeks of term, we will cancel their place on the course.
What if we miss a class?
Regular weekly attendance is essential for all of our courses. No refunds or make-up classes are offered if a student misses a class. We do understand, however, that illness and some other commitments cannot be avoided. We ask that all parents/students inform the academy team ahead of time if they are unable to make a session.
What do students need to wear to their classes?
All students are provided with a complimentary Simply Theatre Academy t-shirt at the start of the academic year, (our Minis (ages 4 to 6 years old) wear red Simply Theatre t-shirts, while students in Stages 1 – 4 wear (ages 7 through to 18) wear black Simply Theatre t-shirts). All students are asked to come to class in black leggings or trousers, with their hair tied up, and with minimal jewellery. Further details for specific requirements for PA classes can be found in our terms and conditions.
How will you keep me informed about my child’s development?
At the end of Term 1, we have open classes, where parents are invited into the studio to see the style of teaching, the environment, and the types of activities we have been working on. In Term 2 we have individual parent-teacher meetings for a one-on-one conversation about your child and how they are progressing. Staff will also be available to book an appointment on the phone or by email if you have any specific concerns or feedback during the year.
My child is not a student at the academy can they join a summer camp?
Yes! Our week-long summer camp workshops are open to non-students as well as current students, so it is a great way to come and experience what life is like at the academy.
Do children have to be current academy students to audition for Simply Theatre productions?
Yes, auditions for roles in our productions are open to current academy students only.
Can Simply Theatre students take exams?
Yes! Simply Theatre Academy is proud to offer its students the opportunity to take LAMDA examinations in Acting and Musical Theatre. LAMDA ( London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art) is one of the UK’s most prestigious drama schools offering performance-based examinations and examinations are open to all Academy students aged 7 plus, with the approval of their Academy teacher. Our LAMDA Courses are a combination of private and group lessons, with a mock exam and a final exam. For more information on our LAMDA courses click here.
What performing opportunities do you provide for your students?
All academy students experience performing as a regular part of their weekly classes, and every class performs on stage in front of an audience of family and friends at their end-of-year showcase. We run regular Open Stage Nights at which students can choose to perform a solo or ensemble piece of their choice. Throughout the year there will also be a number of opportunities for students (aged 8+) to audition for Simply Theatre productions.
Do you offer discounts for siblings?
Yes. We offer a 10% discount to all siblings from the same family enrolled on weekly courses and a 10% discount for siblings on summer camp bookings.
